Glenlivet Guardians' Chapter
The Glenlivet was the first distillery to be granted a licence following the 1823 excise act, and in doing so George Smith became the first owner to operate on the right side of the law. This didn't come without it's risks as demonstrated by the Laird of Aberlour's gift following Smith's decision - a pair of pistols. Pioneering often pays dividends though, especially with such a high quality product as the distillery was creating. The acrimonious neighbours followed and illicit distilling in the region died out. The Glenlivet produced such a revered whisky that other distilleries would use Glenlivet as part of their name, a practice which occurred right through to the 1980's and the reason some older vintages of whisky from other distilleries are labelled "Macallan-Glenlivet" for example. This is also why you'll see The Glenlivet used on the label to mark out this distillery's whisky from others historically riding their coat tails
The Glenlivet have produced a number of old vintage whiskies over the years as both independent and official bottlings, and in recent years have released a number of blacked out bottle releases with minimum information to engage fans - Alpha, Cipher, Code and Enigma
